UAE number plates: how the seven emirates differ

A UAE plate is more than its digits. Compare the emirate, vehicle type, code or category and digit combination. Colour, layout and the age of a photograph help describe appearance, but they do not confirm the terms of registration. This guide explains where to start in each of the seven emirates and what to clarify about a particular number.

Quick answer

If a photograph shows only digits, it is not a complete identification. For example, “A 811” gives a letter and combination, but without the emirate and vehicle type it cannot support a reliable comparison. Record visible features and mark unknowns separately. Do not choose Classic because a plate looks unusual.

Then separate two goals: you may like a digit combination and want to know whether a particular number can be arranged for a specific car. The first is a preference; the second requires a current check of the offer and official procedure.

Which details to keep separate

The emirate determines which system and official information to consult. Vehicle type separates car plates from motorcycle plates. Code or category completes the identification, while digits create the pattern you like: repetition, mirror, sequence or a personal date.

Describe the physical execution separately: plate proportions, lettering placement and colour. A design name and a registration category do not necessarily mean the same thing. Do not treat “VIP”, “premium” or a design label as confirmed status.

An unknown characteristic is a question, not an invitation to fill the gap from a similar photograph. If the code is unreadable, save the image and ask for the exact designation. Use the same fields when comparing several offers.

Seven emirates: where to start

Dubai. RTA provides an official service for buying special numbers, where an available number is selected through the stated procedure. Record the code and digits in a listing, then clarify the category. The existence of an official service does not confirm availability of every photographed number.

Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi Mobility describes vehicle-licensing services available through TAMM. Clarify the full designation and category of the particular number, then identify the applicable operation. Matching digits with Dubai does not mean the conditions are the same.

Sharjah. A WAM report dated 23 December 2025 names a new plate category for classic vehicles and a first category for motorcycles. These are two directions, not one combined category. The dated announcement and today’s completion conditions must be checked separately.

Ajman. On 6 August 2025, Ajman Police announced a digital service related to ownership of classic-vehicle plates. The news date belongs to the service announcement; it cannot establish when every Classic design first appeared.

Ras Al Khaimah. Start with the emirate’s government portal when looking for official information. Words such as Distinguished or Premium need clarification: are they an official name, a digit characteristic or advertising language? A name alone proves neither category nor rights.

Umm Al Quwain. The government portal is a starting point for finding the relevant service. When comparing photographs, establish vehicle type and image provenance separately. A new post may contain an old image; the post date is not always the plate-issue date.

Fujairah. Start with the government portal, then direct the question to the service named on the relevant page. If shape or dimensions matter, ask about the car and operation. Measuring a screen image is not an official specification. How to read a listing step by step

Imagine a card with a photograph, short digits and a price but no check date. Save the link and viewing date. Then record the emirate, vehicle type, readable code and digits. Mark covered characters separately.

Ask the proposer for the full designation, category, current status and cost breakdown. Use the official service to establish the applicable procedure. A photograph and stated price do not by themselves confirm rights to the number or transfer permission.

Why the same digit fragment is not one number

The combination 123 can appear with different codes, in different emirates and on different vehicle types. Searching by digits alone can therefore lead to another object even when the visual match seems exact.

Compare the emirate, vehicle type, category, code and digits, then add the link and date. If a material parameter differs or is unknown, do not treat the offers as interchangeable until it is clarified.

Vehicle type, Classic and motorcycles

A motorcycle plate belongs to a different vehicle type. Do not transfer car codes, dimensions or completion terms automatically. Private and commercial use may also require separate checking in the relevant emirate.

Classic does not simply mean an old photograph or an attractive typeface. First establish whether the category applies to the car. Similarity to a historic sample does not prove that right.

Keep the vehicle requirements fixed and allow flexibility in the digit pattern. For example, a different ending may be discussed; changing the category merely for an attractive combination requires confirmation.

Questions before an enquiry

Prepare the emirate, vehicle type, desired digits, known code or category, budget and acceptable alternatives. Add a link to the example and explain what attracted your attention. Mark unknown information clearly.

Ask the reply to separate confirmed characteristics, current availability, cost breakdown and the official next step. Your criteria and contact are enough for a first enquiry; do not send documents, passwords or one-time codes in an open field.

Frequently asked questions

Can colour or a border identify the emirate? They may help with orientation, but a particular offer needs a full designation and verifiable information.

Can digits reveal the price? No. A digit pattern does not set the price or prove availability. Compare offers with like-for-like characteristics and terms.

Does an old photograph confirm a current series? No. Check its date and source, then check current status separately.

Is there one completion procedure for all seven emirates? The sources do not support that conclusion. Check the emirate, vehicle and particular operation.

Can I immediately order any number found online? MULTIPLATES accepts sourcing enquiries; availability and applicable terms are checked separately. If the exact option is unavailable, discuss acceptable alternatives.

Next step

Read a plate as a combination of context and digits: emirate, vehicle, category, code, combination and source date. Describe these fields in a checking enquiry so the team can clarify the criteria and suggest a clear next step.
